Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate are the tax calculations?

Although we strive to have 99% accurate calculations, the fact that the calculator is free makes things more difficult. We rely on our own database created through analyzing hundreds of thousands of used vehicles to arrive at an estimate of your vehicle. Vehicle prices depend on many factors such as year of manufacture, equipment level, etc. Most often the calculator is over 90% accurate, however the rarer/more exclusive or more expensive the car, the greater the deviation may be. As an example, keep in mind that most Porsche models can have optional equipment almost as much as the vehicle itself (over 50,000 euros in equipment), so it is difficult to predict an exact price for some vehicles.

What documents do I need for import?

Most often you will need the vehicle registrations (large and small if the vehicle is from Germany), as well as the purchase agreement. It is good to have a certificate of conformity (CoC) because customs uses it to get information about the vehicle, however if you don't have it it's not a problem, it will just cost you another 1,000-2,000 denars to get it here. With these documents the vehicle can be cleared through customs and then all other necessary documents can be obtained from Freight forwarding and technical inspection (when you do homologation). Before submitting all documents to MVR, the registrations and purchase agreement need to be translated and notarized. For more information about documents, contact a Freight forwarding company.

How long does the customs and import process take?

The process itself after the car arrives in Macedonia usually takes 2-3 weeks, but can be completed in as little as one week. Customs clearance of the vehicle while it is in the terminal (customs warehouse) takes 1-3 days, homologation takes 1 day, and if you need to obtain CoC you may need to wait another 2-3 days. The most time is taken by sending documents to MVR and getting a response, which can be 3-5 days.

Can I import any vehicle?

No, because vehicles must meet certain conditions for emissions and age. The problem is not importing the vehicle, but registering it. Most often vehicles with Euro 4 that are newer than 2008 can be imported without problems, but consult with a Freight forwarder before buying a vehicle.

Are there additional taxes not included in the calculator?

Yes, and those are 40-50 Euros for freight forwarding, 25 Euros for customs terminal/warehouse, 20-30 Euros for document translation, and 100 Euros for technical homologation. If you want to also do registration add another 150 Euros for insurance and 100 Euros for registration. In total that's another 450-500 Euros.
